Postgraduate Study

As part of its program to promote stronger interactions between the College of Dentistry and general dental practitioners, the University of 

Sulaimani runs a postgraduate degree (High diploma, MSc and PhD). Our courses meet the career development and professional aspirations of 

our alumni and other dentistry professionals.

Award type

1- MSc degree

Master qualification is based on a series of 120 credit modules, which should be taken full-time over 2 to 3 years. The course includes 60 credits 

of core modules. For the award of the full masters degree, students will additionally present research project, which will complete their studies.

MSc research project

The aim is to expose students to principles and practicalities of performing dental research. Projects range from:

  • Laboratory studies
  • Analysis of new data sets
  • Systematic reviews
  • Short-term clinical studies

Clinical experience

Clinical experience involves:

  • Clinical skills training
  • Supervised patient treatment sessions

  • Diagnostic clinics
  • Laboratory work (including a laboratory course)

2- PhD degree

A PhD involves original research that should make a significant contribution to the knowledge of a specific subject. Your research will enable 

you to become an expert in your chosen topic. This requires a significant time commitment, usually three years full time. PhD qualification is 

based on a series of 60 credit module and research project. 

The course includes 15 credits of core module that will be designed according to the project’s need with supervisor’s collaboration and student’s 

needs. For the award of the full PhD degree, students will additionally present research project, which will complete their studies Student will 

develop your project with help from an academic supervisor or team of supervisors. This could be theoretical or involve working with 

an industrial partner to develop new products. It will depend on your subject and research interests. To complete the PhD you will produce a 

substantial piece of work (80,000 – 100,000 words) in the form of a supervised thesis. It should show evidence of originality and be suitable for 

publication. You will mainly carry out independent research. A designated academic team provides advice and supervision and you will attend 

research training (postgraduate, degrees, research) sessions.
